Explanation
Trust building is the process of establishing confidence in others' reliability, intentions, and competence. Trust has multiple dimensions: competence trust (belief in ability), integrity trust (belief in honesty and ethics), and benevolence trust (belief they have your interests at heart). Trust is built through: consistent follow-through on commitments, transparent communication, admitting mistakes, sharing credit, and showing vulnerability. The 'trust equation' by Maister suggests trust = (credibility + reliability + intimacy) / self-orientation. High self-interest destroys trust regardless of other factors. Trust building takes time but can be destroyed quickly - recovery requires even more time. Different cultures have different trust assumptions: some start with trust until broken, others require trust be earned. For knowledge workers, trust building is essential because: collaboration requires it, influence depends on it, and psychological safety requires team trust.
