A Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) is the one person who is unambiguously accountable for a given task, decision, or outcome. The concept, popularized by Apple's internal management culture, answers a deceptively simple question for any piece of work: "Whose name is next to this?" When every initiative has a DRI, there is always a clear point of ownership - someone to drive it forward, make the calls, and answer for the result.
The DRI pattern is a direct structural remedy to the failure modes of group ownership. When responsibility is shared across a committee or a whole team, it is effectively owned by no one: this is the diffusion of responsibility, where each person assumes someone else will act. Decisions stall, get watered down into consensus compromises, or never get made at all. By naming a single accountable individual, the DRI model restores conceptual integrity to the work - one person holds the vision and ensures the pieces cohere - while still allowing broad input and collaboration. The DRI gathers feedback widely but decides narrowly.
Crucially, being a DRI is about accountability, not about doing all the work alone or having unilateral power over everything. A good DRI consults experts, delegates execution, and builds consensus where it is cheap to do so - but when the group cannot agree, the DRI is the person empowered to break the tie and move forward. This is the complement to practices like "disagree and commit": the DRI makes the call, and the team commits to it.
The model relates to similar constructs such as Amazon's single-threaded leader (a leader wholly dedicated to one initiative) and the RACI framework's "Accountable" role. Adopting DRIs is a lightweight, high-leverage intervention: it counteracts design by committee, the HiPPO problem, and bikeshedding by making it clear who decides and who is answerable, without requiring heavy process.
